Family Resource Guide

Finding the Right Nanny for Your Family

A complete guide for families — from knowing what you need to welcoming the right nanny into your home.

Choosing a nanny is an important decision, and every family deserves childcare tailored to their individual needs, values, and lifestyle. The right nanny provides dependable, nurturing care while respecting the routines, expectations, and priorities established by parents.

Since 2001, Southern Nannies Plus has specialized in providing personalized nanny placement services to families throughout Alabama, with additional placements in other states. With 25 years of experience, we understand that no two families are alike, and neither are their childcare needs. This guide is designed to help you navigate the nanny selection process with confidence, understand the important considerations involved in hiring a professional nanny, and make informed decisions about the care that best suits your family.

Step 1

Understanding Your Family's Childcare Needs

Every family has its own routines, priorities, and expectations. Identifying these details is an important first step toward finding a nanny who complements your household and provides the level of care your children deserve.

Consider your family's scheduling needs, the ages and developmental stages of your children, the responsibilities you would like your nanny to manage, and any specialized care requirements. Equally important are the personal qualities, experience, and childcare philosophy that best align with your family.

At Southern Nannies Plus, we take these considerations into account when developing a personalized search tailored to your family's individual needs.
Step 2

Step 2: Choose Your Search Method

Families typically find nannies through one of three paths:

Recommended

Professional Nanny Placement Agency

Professional placement agencies provide a personalized approach to the nanny search, including candidate evaluation, reference verification, background screening, and guidance throughout the hiring process.

Online Platforms

Families can browse nanny profiles and communicate directly with prospective candidates. However, independently verifying qualifications, contacting professional references, conducting comprehensive background checks, and evaluating each candidate's suitability remain the family's responsibility.

Personal Referrals

Recommendations from friends, relatives, or trusted acquaintances can be a starting point in the nanny search. However, even personally recommended candidates should undergo professional reference verification, comprehensive background screening, and a thorough evaluation of their childcare experience and qualifications.

Step 3

Step 3: Evaluating Nanny Candidates

Selecting a qualified nanny involves much more than reviewing a résumé. A comprehensive screening and evaluation process provides families with valuable insight into each candidate's professional experience, qualifications, background, and suitability for their household.

Background Screening

Comprehensive background checks, including criminal history, sex offender registry searches, driving record checks, and Social Security number verification to confirm identity.

Professional Reference Verification

Contacting previous childcare employers to verify employment history, responsibilities, reliability, professionalism, and the quality of care provided.

Childcare Experience & Employment History

Reviewing each candidate's professional childcare experience, employment history, previous responsibilities, and reasons for leaving former positions.

CPR & First Aid Qualifications

Verifying current CPR and First Aid certifications and evaluating knowledge of childcare safety and emergency procedures.

Personal Interviews

Conducting detailed interviews to evaluate professionalism, communication skills, childcare philosophy, personality, judgment, and compatibility with the family's expectations.

Childcare Knowledge & Experience Assessment

Evaluating each candidate's understanding of child development, age-appropriate care, safety practices, daily routines, and their ability to respond appropriately to various childcare situations.

Step 4

Step 4: Comprehensive Candidate Interviews

Every candidate who meets our initial qualifications participates in a comprehensive interview designed to evaluate their professional experience, childcare expertise, judgment, communication skills, and overall suitability for placement.

With 25 years of industry experience, Southern Nannies Plus understands that an exceptional nanny brings more to a household than childcare experience alone. We evaluate each candidate's ability to establish a safe, nurturing, and structured environment while adapting to the individual needs, expectations, and dynamics of the family.

Our interview process explores professional work history, age-specific childcare experience, developmental knowledge, discipline approaches, emergency preparedness, reliability, professionalism, and the ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.

We also assess each candidate's long-term career goals, scheduling expectations, and compatibility with the positions we represent.

Our goal is not simply to identify qualified candidates, but to recognize exceptional childcare professionals who demonstrate the experience, character, and judgment our families deserve.

Step 5

Step 5: Make It Official

Once you're ready to begin your nanny search, the next step is to formally engage Southern Nannies Plus.

To initiate the placement process, families will:

  • Complete the Client Application – Provide information about your family, childcare needs, schedule, and expectations.
  • Sign the Client Agreement – Review and acknowledge the terms and conditions of our placement services.
  • Submit the Placement Retainer – Pay the required 50% nonrefundable retainer to officially begin your nanny search.

Once these steps are completed, Southern Nannies Plus will begin the personalized process of identifying and evaluating qualified candidates for your family.
